My most recent article went up at Pride Source today! I wrote about the experience of changing my gender marker to X here in Illinois (and what a time to do it). I also had the pleasure of interviewing Julisa Abad, who does incredible work with Fair Michigan to support LGBTQ+ folks in her state—including hosting name and gender-marker change clinics for low-income trans folks, which connect them with legal resources and walk them through what can be a lengthy, complex, and delicate process.
For me, changing my ID was more or less entirely for affirming purposes. But for a lot of folks, it’s life-saving work, as Julisa readily pointed out. Give it a read:
